I love a good morning routine. I am not naturally a morning person at all, so having some kind of structure in the morning is really important for me to start my day. I also wake up starving every single morning, (I've never understood people who skip breakfast) and I usually like to start my morning off with warm water and lemon. My mom who is a big proponent of Ayurveda also drinks warm water with lemon every day and it's a great way to kick start digestion and get things moving (if you know what i mean) - if this is TMI you may not want to keep reading LOL.
Moving on! I've been having some serious issues with bloating - YES, skinny people bloat. I'm not sure if it's a food intolerance or what but I refuse to go on an 'elimination diet' which would consist of me eliminating several food groups; dairy, wheat etc. because A. I'm addicted to carbs and I'm terrified that I'm allergic to gluten and B. I think the quality of my life would seriously deteriorate if I had to give up pasta. If you've been reading my blog you know I like pasta.
SO - I started doing a lot of research on how I could help my bloating issue and discovered that really I just need help with digesting. At first I thought about doing a 3-day juice cleanse but after more research and talking to people I decided to pass on that for now. I cut out alcohol from my diet for 10 days and found that that didn't really do anything for my bloating either, so finally I decided on jazzing up my warm lemon water in the morning and made my own detox drink to have every morning and let me tell you, I have DEFINITELY seen a difference. Not like, holy crap this is the secret to all my issues, but enough of where I definitely felt less bloated and also felt more clear headed and energetic throughout my day.
I based it off of Dr. Axe's detox drink and added mint and turmeric. Let me break it down so you know why each ingredient is so good for you and perfect to start your day with. Also, I drink this first thing and then eat breakfast (usually at work) about an hour later.
Apple cider vinegar (raw, organic and unfiltered): Lowers cholesterol, promotes circulation and detoxifies the liver. The acid in the vinegar binds to toxins which helps in removing toxins from the body. If you have a cold, this is also a great solution. Apple cider vinegar helps break up mucus in the body and helps clear the lymph nodes. The antibiotic properties and bacteria fighting power in the cider also helps settle the stomach and assists in digestion (score!)
Raw organic honey: Boosts immune system and is loaded with antioxidants. Also makes this drink taste much better
Cayenne pepper: Increases metabolism and stimulates the digestive tract
Fresh mint: Soothes stomach and is a great digestive aid and fights inflammation
Lemon: Loaded with vitamin C and has an alkaline effect on your body (so you don't have to spend all your money on Fiji water but that's a post for another time)
Turmeric: anti-inflammatory, neutralizes free radicals, improves brain function and is also thought to be a cancer preventative (it's currently being intensely studied but no real proof yet)
Ginger: digestive aid, boosts the immune system and anti-inflammatory
half of juice from a lemon
thumb size of ginger (minced or sliced)
1/4 tsp turmeric
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
a bunch of fresh mint
2-3 tbs apple cider vinegar
3.5 cups of warm water
I like to use these big jugs that are about 4 cups worth of water:
Feel free to tweak your proportions! Sometimes I add more honey and lemon and other times I add more turmeric - it really is up to you! If you don't like a certain flavor, feel free to omit it.
Comment below and let me know if you like it or if you add anything to yours! Stay healthy!
